Too much cholesterol can clog your arteries, which over time, can contribute to heart attacks and strokes. Too little cholesterol can be just as dangerous as too much. Cholesterol control is the answer!

Italian researchers found that men with prostate cancer were around 50% more likely to have had high cholesterol levels than their non-prostate cancer controls. The association was somewhat stronger for men whose high cholesterol levels had been diagnosed before they were 50 and for men over 65, where there was an 80% greater likelihood of high cholesterol levels.

The typical American diet with lots of meat and dairy products, not enough vegetables, fruits or fiber, and too much junk food, snacks and fast food, is loaded with cholesterol.

If we are unable or unwilling to change our dietary habits, don't get enough exercise, we are candidates for needing help with cholesterol control.

Nearly Half Of People Who Need Cholesterol Treatment Don't Get It. Even though treatment for cholesterol disorders can reduce the risk of heart and blood vessel disease by about 30 percent over five years, many at-risk people aren't getting adequate treatment, according to researchers from Wake Forest University School of Medicine and colleagues reporting in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association.

We do have a choice. We can follow our doctor's advice and take expensive statin drugs for the rest of our lives, (or) explore natural products to reduce our cholesterol.

High-density lipoproteins (HDL) carry cholesterol from the blood back to the liver, which processes the cholesterol for elimination from the body. HDL makes it less likely that excess cholesterol in the blood will be deposited in the coronary arteries, which is why HDL cholesterol is often referred to as the "good" cholesterol.

In general, the higher your LDL and the lower your HDL, the greater your risk for atherosclerosis and heart disease.

For adults age 20 years or over, the latest guidelines from the National Cholesterol Education Program recommend the following optimal levels:

  • Total cholesterol less than 200 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dl)

  • HDL cholesterol levels greater than 40 mg/dl

  • LDL cholesterol levels less than 100 mg/dl

According to the late Dr. Atkins: One of the two key reasons why drugs should not be the first line of defense is safety.

In some cases, a small percentage of people who take statin drugs develop nerve damage; others report muscle damage. There also is the possibility of elevating liver enzymes, suggesting that statins may cause liver damage. Statin drugs deplete the body�s stores of co-enzyme Q10, and research shows that women with low levels of coQ10 are at higher risk for breast cancer. Statins also have been linked to erectile dysfunction.


Sadly, the risks and side effects associated with statin drugs are being ignored in an attempt to simplify the treatment of a complex condition. Nor do we yet know the long-term effects of taking statin drugs for decades. The second reason to question this recommendation is cost. Certainly the pharmaceutical industry is busy celebrating a major public-relations coup and a huge sales windfall.

Currently, approximately 25 million patients worldwide are receiving statins (13 million in the United States). The problem is that statins cost $2 to $3 per day in most markets, an amount that is straining the budgets of insurance companies and of countries that have national healthcare systems, not to mention people without a prescription drug benefit.
