Saw Palmetto Hormone Balancer for Men and Women

Saw Palmetto for male prostrate problems and libido enhancer for men and women

(serenoa repens) inhibits androgen and estrogen receptor activity and may be beneficial for both sexes in balancing the hormones. It has a reputation as a sexual stimulant and aphrodisiac. The largest uses for Saw Palmetto are reducing enlarged prostate glands, treating urinary tract problems, improving body strength and increasing breast size. Saw Palmetto tonifies and clears the mucous membranes and provides a mild sedative to the nervous system.

Women have used the herb to stimulate breast enlargement and lactation as well as treating ovarian and uterine irritability. It has been prescribed for reduced or absent sex drive, impotence and frigidity. Because of its potential hormonal effects, pregnant women should not use it. Saw Palmettto has been recommended in treatment of diseases that deprive the body of strength and growth. Preliminary evidence exists to also suggest saw palmetto may also aid those suffering from thyroid deficiency.

Saw Palmetto is very safe, being long used by Native Americans as a food and as an herbal treatment for enuresis, nocturia, atrophy of the testes, impotence, inflammation of the prostate and low libido in men. Herbalists consider this form of saw palmetto a mild aphrodisiac. Women also use the berries to treat infertility, painful periods and problems with lactation.

The berries contain an oil with several fatty acids, including capric, caprylic, caproic, lauric, oleic and palmitic and acid, and their ethylesters plus high amounts of phytosterols (beta- sito sterol, cycloartenol, stigmasterol, lupeol, lupenone and 24-methylcycloartenol), as well as other oils, resins, and tannins.

The fat-soluble (liposterolic) extract of the saw palmetto berry has become the leading natural treatment for BPH - Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia. This extract, when used regularly, has been shown to help keep symptoms in check. Saw palmetto appears to inhibit 5-alpha-reductase, the enzyme that converts testosterone to its more active form, dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Saw palmetto also blocks DHT from binding in the prostate. Studies have used 320 mg per day of saw palmetto extract that is standardized to contain approximately 85% fatty acids.

A three-year study in Germany found that 160 mg of saw palmetto extract taken twice daily reduced nighttime urination in 73% of patients and improved urinary flow rates significantly. In European studies, 160 mg of saw palmetto extract taken twice per day treated BPH as effectively as Finasteride (Proscar) without side effects, such as loss of libido. A one-year study found that 320 mg once per day was as effective as 160 mg twice per day in the treatment of BPH. A review of all available double blind studies has concluded that saw palmetto is effective for treatment of men with BPH and is just as effective as, with fewer side effects than, the drug finasteride.

For men it treats an enlarged and weakened prostate gland. It has shown significant action in treatment of conditions associated with benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). Saw palmetto extract works to prevent testosterone from converting into dihydrotestosterone, the hormone thought to cause prostrate cells to multiply, leading to an enlarged prostate. It is chiefly used as a diuretic and to tone the bladder by improving urinary flow, and relieving strain. Regular use of saw palmetto may decrease urinary frequency, especially during the night, by allowing complete bladder expulsion and reducing inflammation of the bladder and enlarged prostrate.

Saw palmetto inhibits androgen and estrogen receptor activity and may be beneficial for both sexes in balancing the hormones. Because of it hormonal effects it can aid the thyroid in regulating sexual development and normalizing activity of those glands and organs.

Saw Palmetto is recommended in treatment of diseases that deprive the body of strength and growth. Saw palmetto is a good expectorant for use in clearing chest congestion and can be used to treat coughs, asthma, and bronchitis.

It has also been used to stimulate appetite, improve digestion, nourish the nervous system and increase the assimilation of nutrients to the body.
