  Anti-Aging and Longevity Supplements

Anti-aging and longevity supplements slow down and even reverse many symptoms of aging - fatigue, muscle and joint pain, vision problems and mental alertness with phytonutrients and nutraceuticals.

Staying young is more about health and less about looks, according to a new market report which indicates that Americans spend more than eight times as much on formulated anti-aging products for health maintenance as they do on products to ward off the outward signs of aging.

One secret to a long and healthy life lies in avoiding weight gain and keeping active, a Canadian researcher working in the U.S. has found.

Dr. Bradley Willcox of the Pacific Health Research Institute in Honolulu and his colleagues found men who have normal blood pressure, good grip strength and other traits at midlife had a higher chance of staying healthy in old age.

The aging baby-boomer generation is now contributing to a 2.5 per cent annual increase in the size of the over 50s population in the U.S., and the over 50s age group is rapidly changing its attitudes towards aging, which is directly affecting consumer habits.

Although the quest for longevity is as old as civilization itself, only recently have technical and conceptual advances brought us to the point of understanding the precise molecular events that make us age. In the past century, scientific advances have added decades to the average life span. In the future, antiaging and longevity supplements will add decades more to our life span.

More people are buying products for memory improvement, vision care, prostate care, menopause relief and longevity. Eye health has become an area of increasing interest for aging Americans as studies have shown that carotenoids lutein, zeaxanthin, astaxanthin and zinc can help prevent the onset of the progressive eye diseases: age related macular degeneration and cataracts.

We are featuring 3 relatively unknown anti-aging herbs from Asia. They are Ashwagandha, Gotu Kola and Jiaogulan. They are excellent as stand-alone herbs, however, when they are combined - 2 each morning and 2 each evening - they take on almost a magical quality: your mood is much better, your memory is sharper, you feel energized and you sleep much better at night.

Be patient, it takes about a week to feel the full effect of this herbal trifecta.

Researchers in Sweden have discovered that growth hormone (GH) treatment may result in the reduction of multiple metabolic disorders associated with abdominal obesity in postmenopausal women. Published in the March 2005 issue of The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, these findings demonstrate the important role growth hormone treatment may play in reducing serious metabolic conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease.

AD is an irreversible disorder of the brain, robbing those who have it of memory, and eventually, overall mental and physical function, leading to death. It is the most common cause of dementia among people over age 65. Recent studies estimate that up to 4.5 million people currently have the disease, and the prevalence (the number of people with the disease at any one time) doubles every 5 years after the age of 65. By 2050, if current population trends continue and no preventive treatments become available, some 13.5 million Americans will have Alzheimer's disease.

Baby Boomers and the "Boom" in Alternative Medicine

This group of approximately 76 million people tends to look for new solutions to treat old problems. They have a desire for wellness and they expect it. Boomers project an aggressive consumerism as well as a healthy disregard for authority and conformity. They do not wish to "grow old gracefully" and they are starving for answers to the age-old puzzle of youth extension. More than any demographic population before them, this group not only wants to hold on to their youth, but also knows it is possible to do so.

The U.S. population age 65 and older will double in the next 25 years, and the new elders will be healthier, wealthier and more highly educated than previous generations, redefining what it means to be older in America, according to the Census Bureau. The growing obesity rate in America, however, may neutralize this positive projection.

By 2030, about 72 million Americans, or one in every five, will be 65 or older. The aging of our society will have profound consequences on our future, and, in fact, it's a not very distant future. The first of the baby boomers, those born between 1946 and 1964, are turning 60 this year at the rate of about 8,000 a day. The boomers will enter retirement as the most educated generation in American history.

Take Probiotics

People over 60 have about 1,000-fold less "friendly" bacteria in their guts compared with other adults. The human gut contains different strains of bacteria, some of which are "friendly", such as bifidobacteria or lactobacilli, some that help with food digestion and some that are disease-causing. Having a balance of friendly bacteria is thought to stop harmful forms taking hold and causing disease.

Glenn Gibson, professor of food microbiology at Reading University, said: "The (scientific) literature has reported about 80 human studies with positive results against bowel conditions like travellers diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome and antibiotic-associated diarrhea."

While probiotics are useful for the healthy population - helping to prevent bacteria which cause food poisoning, such as E.coli or campylobacter, from taking hold, they would be even more beneficial for older people.

Dr Sandra McFarlane, from the University of Dundee said that as people got older they had reduced levels of friendly bacteria and increased levels of disease-causing bacteria. At about the age of 60 there was a big drop in bacteria levels, and older people had 1,000-fold less friendly bacteria than other younger adults.

Older people are more susceptible to gastrointestinal infections and bowel conditions, like IBS. The scientists said this population would benefit from a boost in friendly bacteria, and it would help to protect against acute and chronic bowel diseases. They also said people of all ages on antibiotics would benefit from probiotics because antibiotics reduce levels of all strains of bacteria in the gut. Many of the meat, dairy and poultry products we buy at the grocery store already have antibiotics in them.

Ashwagandha, Maca, Korean Panax Ginseng and Siberian Ginseng are considered adaptogenic. They are noted for their anti-fatigue and antiaging effects. They enhance the overall immunity including antibody response, natural killer cell activity and interferon production. It appears they have some anti-tumor effects. Adaptogenic herbs support all the major systems: nervous system, hormonal system and immune system.

By normalizing our bodily functions, adaptogens help maintain the stable internal environment known as homeostasis. In order for our body parts to work efficiently, the concentrations of water, food substances, and oxygen (as well as the conditions of heat and pressure) must remain within certain very narrow limits. By helping body parts remain in balance, adaptogens can help us have more energy and greater health.

MSM is great for allergies, inflammation, irregularity, muscle cramps and soreness, as well as improving the condition of your hair, skin and nails. MSM is the most potent anti-allergenic substance to come along since the introduction of antihistamines a half century ago. MSM (Methyl Sulfonyl Methane) is an odorless, essentially tasteless, water-soluble white crystalline substance that serves as an important, bioavailable source of dietary sulphur.

Free radicals are implicated in more than fifty diseases including alzheimers. arthritis, cancer and osteoporosis. Free radicals are believed to be the main culprit in the appearance of aging. Free radicals are a byproduct of faulty oxygen metabolism (oxidation) and exposure to a wide variety of external agents. Pycnogenol is the king of antioxidants and free radical scavengers.

Importance of DHEA

Maintaining a youthful hormonal balance is an essential part of an anti-aging regimen. This includes trying to maintain youthful levels of DHEA. Unless supplemented, DHEA levels decrease dramatically due to the aging process, with harmful consequences such as impaired immune function and more chronic inflammation. DHEA users generally report more energy and an improved state of well-being, as well as greater ability to cope with stress. We urge everyone over 45 to take both DHEA and Melatonin.

DHEA is a versatile anti-stress hormone. DHEA also protects us against the immune failure due to aging. In particular, maintaining a normal DHEA/cortisol ratio appears to be critical in trying to prevent the degenerative changes of aging.

Any Physical Activity, At Any Age, Is Better Than Remaining Sedentary

Any physical activity is better than none, at any age, even if it doesnt fit common notions of exercise, says a University of Illinois professor and leading advocate for efforts to encourage active aging.

Its important to choose an activity that you will do, rather than just wishing to do something more ambitious, says Wojtek Chodzko-Zajko, head of the UI kinesiology department and chair of the national Active Aging Partnership, established by the American College of Sports Medicine. It really matters less exactly what you do than it matters to avoid being completely sedentary, he said.

Only about 15 percent of adults over 65 get a recommended level of physical activity, based on a 1996 report from the U.S. Surgeon General, and as many as one-third get none at all, Chodzko-Zajko noted in an article for the November issue of the journal Quest, titled Successful Aging in the New Millennium: The Role of Regular Physical Activity.

People of retirement age who took supplements of both vitamin E and C daily saw their risk of Alzheimer's disease plummet by almost 80 per cent, a new study shows.

It appears that when the two vitamins are taken in high doses they work together to protect neurons. The use of these antioxidant vitamins may offer an attractive strategy for the prevention of Alzheimer disease. It appears the high dose of vitamin available in individual supplements is what provided the additional protection.

Vitamin supplements - and vitamins E and C - have been touted for years as effective against a host of conditions, including cardiovascular disease and some forms of cancer.
